Hi, I’m John. I’ve been working in recycling, composting, renewable energy, and climate action for over twenty years. I originally sketched these comics as doodles in my lab notebook, reflecting on the major difference between intentions and outcomes of sustainability work.
Limits to Green is a serious critique of “clean” and “green” technology, based on both research findings and lived experience. I try to keep the the comics playful and reflective, knowing that so much of our work is well-meaning but ultimately subject to forces that can feel beyond our control.
Nowadays I’m a vocal advocate for limits on economic growth as a path to actually reducing environmental impacts. I’m also a researcher and teacher of industrial ecology and ecological economics. Check out links to other work below.
